Mac and Cheese

I feel like the only thing Haydn will ever eat each time I make it, is Mac and Cheese. He loves that stuff! He seriously will ask for it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! When we go out to eat, Mac and Cheese is what he orders. (I have no idea why in the world someone would ever order mac and cheese when they go out to eat...on that note, I don't know why anyone would ever order MEATLOAF either!!! Blech!) The smell of noodles cooking kind of make me nauseous. I could explain, but then you might be disgusted at the smell of noodles too. Anyhow, I often give in to the mac and cheese. We even had to make a rule that we will not make mac and cheese every day. So far, we've been good. My biggest concern about the mac and cheese is that it really doesn't have a lot of nutritional value. He doesn't like a lot of fresh fruit. He'll eat bananas (only about half of it though), grapefruit, and grapes. He claims to like blueberries and requests them all the time, but I've never seen him actually eat one. I can get him to eat canned mandarin oranges, peaches and pears. He'll eat just about ANY fruit as long as it is dehydrated. Seriously...raisins (what kid doesn't like raisins), apples, bananas, even mangos! So how do I get him to eat something other than mac and cheese? I've tried telling him that he needs to eat all his food so he can grow big and strong (which he has interpreted as really tall like my dad). I explained that Thomas the Tank Engine gets his energy from coal and water otherwise he wouldn't be able to go anywhere and Haydn needs to eat food and drink plenty of water so he can get his energy too. I shouldn't complain...I'm pretty sure I was a pickier eater than he is!

Chop up broccoli really finely and mix it in with the sauce. He won't even be able to tell. Or add peas, really tiny carrot slivers, or anything else you can grate up really fine. It's sneaky, but it works and if you're really good, they can't even tell. ;)

Great ideas...one problem, he MUST help me make it. He always has to pour everything in. Maybe if he adds it he'll like it.

I don't know...broccoli has a pretty distinct flavor AND smell...no matter how fine it is. Gratefully my kids LOVE the stuff. Neither of mine like fruit, though. They do the same thing and SAY they like this or that but then they won't eat it. Emily is pickier than Gianna...most of the time.
I really believe that being honest with your kids is the best policy. Continue sharing with him what good properties the different foods have and get him to at least taste it each time (he may not swallow or chew, but the taste is what he needs to get used to in order to make the next step). Emily has come around on more food because of our honesty with her and her appreciation for healthy foods. Best wishes on it!! And, I'm sure the Yellow Death phase will eventually pass...probably just not before your nausea at noodles does. +)

I make mac and cheese from scratch (I'm also leery of the stuff they put in the boxed stuff), but I add in pureed foods (like squash - any orange or yellow veggie) 'for color' and the kids will eat it up. Of course, I had to go on a boxed mac n cheese strike so they didn't really remember the taste of the boxed stuff. I told them, when they did ask if it was from the box that it was the extra cheesy kind. They bought it, but are always looking for the box. Anything I can puree and put into a recipe, I do! I figure it's good for everybody to get an extra 'sneaky' veggie in!
